I set out to give myself a silk press—dreaming of sleek, silky hair with that gloss and stretch you see all over Instagram. But sometimes reality has other plans 😅.

A silk press is supposed to be all about achieving a super smooth, shiny, straight finish on natural hair by washing, blow‑drying, and flat‑ironing in small sections to get that “glass hair” look without chemicals. It’s more than just a blowout because that extra flat‑ironing step is what usually creates the signature sleekness and longer longevity.
But this time? My hair had other ideas.
When I was done styling, instead of sitting there with pin‑straight, silky strands — my hair looked like a blowout: soft, smooth, with so much body and volume. Not what I envisioned for a “true” silk press, but honestly… it was gorgeous. The kind of hair that says “bouncy and full of life,” not “pressed under glass.”
A blowout normally focuses on stretching and smoothing the hair with a blow dryer and brush, without heavy flat‑ironing, so you keep more volume and movement in your hair.
So even though my silk press didn’t go exactly as planned, I walked away with hair that still made me feel fabulous — and that’s really what it’s all about! ❤️
What I learned (so you don’t make the same hair mistake I did 😂)
✨ Silk press vs. blowout:
A proper silk press is usually sleek, shiny, and straighter thanks to flat‑ironing after the blow‑dry, while a blowout usually results in smooth hair with soft, voluminous body.
✨ Techniques matter:
How you blow dry (tension, brush type, heat level) and how flat you go with your flat iron makes a huge difference in the final look — which might be why mine stayed voluminous. I still used heat protectant and took my time, but the look leaned more toward fluffy and full than super sleek this time around.
✨ Volume is a vibe:
Honestly, I was so glad to keep all that volume! It gave me that effortless, lived‑in glam that still felt polished without being rigid.
