How To “Safely” Straighten Your Hair

How I Straightened My Natural Hair With SharkBeauty SmoothStyle

As a lazy naturalista focused on hair health over length, I don’t straighten my hair often, but when I do, I make sure to take steps to protect it. Here’s the process I used to achieve sleek, straight hair for the event while keeping it healthy:

  1. Prep with a Good Wash
Before applying heat, I started with a clean base. I used a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioning mask to ensure my hair was hydrated and ready for styling. Healthy hair always starts with moisture!
  2. Apply a Heat Protectant
This step is a must when using any hot tools. I used a lightweight heat protectant spray to coat my strands and shield them from heat damage while straightening.
  3. Blow Drying
After sectioning my hair, I blow-dried it using the tension method to stretch the curls out before flat ironing. This is key to reducing the amount of heat needed later.
  4. Flat Iron Time
I took small sections of hair and ran the flat iron through each section slowly. I kept the temperature at a moderate level to avoid any excessive heat damage.
  5. Seal and Shine
To finish, I applied a light serum for shine and to lock in the straight style. This also helps protect the hair from any environmental humidity.
