As a homeschooling mom of Haitian descent born in Canada, I am deeply committed to keeping the vibrant traditions and cultural heritage of Haiti alive for my daughters. This May, in honor of Haitian Heritage Month, I am excited to embark on a journey with them to explore the proud history and rich culture of our ancestral homeland.

In recent years, Haiti has often been portrayed negatively in the media, focusing on poverty, natural disasters, and political instability. However, I am determined to challenge these stereotypes and introduce my children to the true essence of Haiti – a country with a proud history of resilience, strength, and cultural vibrancy.
Our journey begins with learning about the Haitian Revolution, a pivotal moment in history when enslaved people in Haiti rose up against their oppressors and fought for freedom. Led by inspiring leaders such as Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti became the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean in 1804. Through books, documentaries, and interactive activities, my daughters will discover the courage and determination of the Haitian people who fought for their liberty.
To supplement our learning, we will be using resources such as Youpi Creole TV, a wonderful YouTube channel that provides educational videos in Haitian Creole. These engaging videos will help my daughters learn about Haitian history, culture, and language in a fun and accessible way.
In addition, we will be utilizing 6-page activity worksheets designed to immerse children in various aspects of Haitian culture. These worksheets cover topics such as Haitian history, and cultural impact. By incorporating these hands-on activities into our curriculum, my daughters will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Haiti while having fun and being creative.

We will also explore the rich cultural heritage of Haiti, from its vibrant music and dance traditions to its delicious cuisine and colorful artwork. Through hands-on activities such as cooking traditional Haitian recipes, learning Haitian Creole phrases, and creating art inspired by Haitian folktales, my daughters will gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Haitian culture.
Ultimately, my goal as a homeschooling mom is to empower my daughters to become global citizens who appreciate and respect the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our world. By celebrating Haitian Heritage Month and introducing my children to the strong history and cultural impact of Haiti, I hope to instill in them a sense of empathy, curiosity, and appreciation for the diversity of the human experience. Together, we will honor the legacy of Haiti and celebrate the resilience and beauty of its people.
