I have three daughters aged 6 and under. They have different hair types and hair textures. I’ve grown to learn that no curl is the same and all children are unique with their own preferences. Of course, one thing they all agree on is that they prefer to avoid getting their hair done at all cost. Unfortunately, that is not the case for them.
Fortunately, we’ve come to a mutual understanding where we can both deal with their hair care by making it as pleasant as possible. Of course, I care more about their hair than they do. But by the time we finish, I make it a point to make sure that the experience is pleasant for us both.
Most of the Time It’s The Tangles & Knots
Dealing with tangled hair can be a daunting task for parents, and it often leads to tears and frustration for both them and their children. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. By establishing a consistent hair routine and incorporating creative tools like technology, books, singing, toys, and snacks, parents can transform hair detangling into a positive bonding experience that both they and their children will look forward to.
1. Setting the Stage with a Hair Routine:
Consistency is key when it comes to hair care. Establishing a regular routine not only makes detangling more manageable but also helps in maintaining healthy hair. Start by choosing a time that works best for both you and your child – whether it’s after a bath or before bedtime. This routine will provide a sense of predictability, making the process less intimidating for your little one.

2. Embrace Technology:
Technology can be a powerful ally in the hair detangling battle. Consider playing their favorite cartoons or videos on a tablet or smartphone. The distraction can turn a potentially stressful experience into an enjoyable one. Just remember to keep the volume at a comfortable level so that you can communicate with your child throughout the process.

3. Dive into a Book Adventure:
Reading a storybook together while detangling hair can work wonders. Choose a captivating book that your child loves and reserve it exclusively for hair detangling sessions. This not only keeps them engaged but also associates a positive activity with hair care. The story’s exciting journey can divert their attention away from any discomfort.
4. Serenade with Singing:
Music has a magical way of easing tension. Turn hair detangling into a mini sing-along session. Create a playlist of your child’s favorite songs or nursery rhymes and sing along together. The rhythmic motion of detangling can sync with the music, making the process seem more fun and rhythmic.
5. Playful Distractions with Toys:
Toys are excellent distractors during hair detangling. Provide your child with a special detangling toy – something they only get to play with during these sessions. It could be a small puzzle, a fidget toy, or a handheld game. The excitement of using a unique toy will make the time fly by.

6. Snack Time Fun:
Snacks are not only great for refueling but also for keeping your child occupied. Prepare a small selection of healthy snacks that your child enjoys and give them a little treat during the detangling process. The anticipation of a snack can make them more cooperative and eager to get through the process.
7. Positive Reinforcement:
Throughout the hair detangling journey, use positive reinforcement to reward your child’s cooperation. Praise them for sitting still, being patient, and making an effort. This positive reinforcement will create a sense of achievement and encourage them to remain calm during future sessions.
Hair detangling doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. With the right approach and a touch of creativity, parents can turn it into a special bonding time with their children. By incorporating technology, books, singing, toys, snacks, and a consistent routine, parents can transform hair detangling from a source of stress into a cherished experience for both parent and child. So, embrace these strategies and embark on a journey towards stress-free, tear-free hair care!
